Real Madrid ran riot with a five-star attacking display against 10-man Dynamo Kiev as their hunt for a 10th European Cup finally got underway.
Fabio Capello's men put a 2-0 defeat at Lyon on matchday one behind them as Ruud van Nistelrooy celebrated becoming a father by scoring a brace, as did his strike partner Raul, with a further goal from Jose Antonio Reyes.
A better team than Kiev would have made Real pay for glaring defensive weaknesses with more than just Artem Milevskiy's consolation effort.
But while they will have to improve at the back if they are to go all the way, Real were at times irresistible when going forward.
Mahamadou Diarra's powerful drive flew into the grasp of the diving Olexandr Shovkovskiy in the visitors' goal and then Roberto Carlos saw the same man tip his long-ranger round the post as Real started as they meant to go on.
On a counter attack, Milevskiy struck the legs of the out-rushing Iker Casillas after being sent clear by Valentin Belkevich as Kiev showed they were capable of causing Real problems at the back.
A spin and shot from Van Nistelrooy hinted at his menace and then, seconds later, he displayed all his predatory prowess, tapping home a drilled shot from Roberto Carlos that Shovkovskiy could only parry to give Real a 20th-minute lead.
Still, Real were far from sure defensively and twice they rode their luck when their defence was carved open, only for Alvaro Mejia to block and then head off the line from the freed Maxim Shatskikh.
But the hosts' cutting edge told again when Raul added to his formidable Champions League tally by stealing in at the far post to head home Reyes' inswinging cross from the right in the 27th minute.
Raul went close again before Reyes, in first-half stoppage time, made it 3-0, curling Diarra's bouncing cross past Shovkovskiy with the outside of his boot.
Kiev pulled a goal back two minutes after the restart when Milevskiy followed up a shot from Carlos Correa that Casillas failed to hold.
David Beckham, on for Reyes, bent a cross onto the head of his former Manchester United team-mate Van Nistelrooy, who almost found the bottom corner.
Milevskiy then drove low at Casillas as Kiev continued to exploit the vulnerabilities of their hosts.
But the Ukrainians were the architects of their own downfall in the 61st minute when, after a poor back pass from Goran Gavrancic, Raul pounced with the sharpness of old to round the keeper and slot home.
Van Nistelrooy was then hauled down by Shovkovskiy, who was red-carded, when clean through and he dusted himself down and tucked the resultant penalty past substitute keeper Olexandr Rybka in the 70th minute.
Van Nistelrooy then made way for Ronaldo to make his first appearance of the season after a knee injury and Diogo Rincon could not punish Real's sloppiness twice late on.
